Fake audio, real violence. Brand new film out now.

Starring Mayor Sadiq Khan, directed by Karim Amer (The Vow, The Square & The Great Hack), and produced by our sister production company, Project Citizen, as well as Jia Chen and Alex Baldwin.

The Fake Mayor shows how online violence erupted into real world violence on the streets of London on Remembrance Day last year and it couldn’t be more timely as a leaked report shows US Capitol Hill Police are preparing for post-election violence risks in the run up to Trump’s inauguration, highlighting the role of social media.

Remembrance weekend 2023. Three separate audio deepfakes of London mayor Sadiq Khan surface on social media in the span of 24 hours. All of them false, stating things Khan never said. They went viral.

One of the deepfakes, a fabricated conversation where Khan is found maligning Remembrace Day celebrations, and lending support to a pro-Palestinian rally incited a far right response.

Khan was demonised and white supremacist groups mobilised on the streets, breached the war memorial and aggressively clashed with the police. Some cheaply manufactured audio deepfakes - going viral on social media - caused total mayhem on London’s streets.

We need your help

Trump has announced that he is going to go after media and research institutions that report on the world of online hate and disinformation, in his so-called fight against the “left-wing censorship regime”. He is talking about us - and our peers.

We need your support, badly. More than ever. The Citizens has a US team, and we work on US democracy. We rely on US philanthropic funding. With Trump’s dedicated efforts to shut down any criticism of his particular brand of techno-fascism, our future is precarious. Our work is needed more than ever - to monitor, investigate and do all we can to hold Big Tech to account. But our ability to do this just got much, much harder.
