Workshop on 'How to investigate and write about Big Tech'

The Citizens and Bylines Network are coming together to organise a hands-on workshop on Big Tech reporting.

Workshop on 'How to investigate and write about Big Tech'

Are you an early career journalist wanting to make Big Tech your beat? Are you an established journalist attempting to make sense of the new and fast-evolving digital spaces? Are you someone running a local paper hoping to understand how Big Tech could be relevant to local news? Are you a citizen journalist who has stumbled upon a Big Tech issue and looking for tools and tactics to pursue your story?

In short, if you are interested in investigating and writing about Big Tech, this workshop is for you.

The Citizens and Bylines Network are proud to be collaborating to combat the 'narrative of doom' about the techno-bro takeover. This event is the first of several joint initiatives, and will feature explainers, Q&As, and hands-on activities.

Join the Citizens' journalists Manasa Narayanan and Sabrina Provenzani for a workshop and conversation around what Big Tech really is and the best ways to report on it.

Sign up for the free workshop to:

  • Understand what Big Tech really is and how it works
  • Learn to recognise the "hybrid media model"
  • See Big Tech’s real role in AI and far-right politics
  • Test out tools for your own investigations

A caveat. The workshop is designed to be an introductory crash course on Big Tech reporting and investigations, particularly for journalists and researchers looking to enter the field. It will probe framing and narratives in existing tech reporting, consider better reporting practices and introduce tools, both old and new, that can aid Big Tech investigations.

So if you are looking for a more general overview of Big Tech history and politics or a pro looking for an advanced methods course, this workshop may not be for you.

That being said, everyone is welcome!

The alternative to Big Tech and fascism lies in community and resistance. Together, The Citizens is building the alternative. Support us so we can do more free events like this.
