Join us for an online webinar on 'How to build an internet free from billionaires'
A discussion on the ways people and organisations are resisting the Big Tech monopoly, with Sherif Essayed-Ali, Nicolás Tapia Correa and Kyle Taylor.

As 2024 came to a close, Director Asif Kapadia premiered his latest documentary feature, 2073. Blending archival footage with science fiction, the film serves as an urgent warning from a dystopian future where surveillance drones fill the skies, and militarised police patrol the streets.
In the context of 2073’s sharp critique of our current political climate — highlighting the unchecked power of Big Tech and authoritarian leaders, and the implications of AI, surveillance, and militarisation — The Citizens and ooto have teamed up to answer the ever-present question: What can we do now?
To kick off, we're hosting our first webinar. It features an incredible lineup of people who are building alternatives, from autonomous servers for community activists to funding new social web infrastructure that operates outside the control of Big Tech and billionaires.
Where: It will be streamed live on Zoom.
How to join: Register below and you'll be sent a link before the event.
You will hear from:
Sherif Elsayed-Ali, a Custodian for Free our Feeds, the campaign harnessing the potential of Bluesky in order to build a new and independent foundation for an entire ecosystem of interconnected apps and different companies that have people’s interests at heart.
Nicolás Tapia Correa, a member of Laboratorio de Popular Medios Libres, a space for building autonomous and free technologies to strengthen community networks and activism in Latin America. Nicolás is also part of Yanapak, an autonomous server promoting digital sovereignty through decentralised tools and services.
Kyle Taylor, the founder of Resistance Hub, which is aimed at supporting civil society in exile to counter the growing tide of authoritarianism in democratic countries. He is a leading expert in digital democracy reform, platform regulation, and other topics at the intersection of technology and society.
And Dr Eleanor Drage will be moderating the discussion. Dr Drage is a Senior Research Fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge, and has a strong interest in commercial concerns and opportunities in AI by working to bridge the gap between industry and academia in AI Ethics. She is the co-host of The Good Robot Podcast and co-editor of books Feminist AI: Critical Perspectives on Algorithms, Data, and Intelligent Machines and The Good Robot: Why Technologies of the Future Need Feminism.
We hope to see you there!
