This is not a film about machines. It's a film about power.
Join us for a screening of Ghost in the Machine, followed by an exclusive panel discussion with the director
We're coming to you with something new from The Citizens. Welcome to Film Club, our grassroots experiment in creating spaces for connection, conversation and action in the age of Big Tech.
We’re kicking off our first season, and below you’ll find details of our upcoming screening and how to get involved.
If you'd rather not receive Film Club updates but still want to hear about our journalism and campaigns, you can update your preferences below.
We're told AI is the future. That it's objective, neutral and inevitable. But what if its past tells us something very different? A past shaped by racism, misogyny, eugenics and the concentration of power.
On Wednesday, 18 November, The Citizens, in partnership with Doc Society, are bringing Film Club to London, or straight to your screen at home, for a special screening of Ghost in the Machine.
There’s plenty to talk about
Directed by acclaimed independent filmmaker Valerie Veatch, who will join us for a panel discussion following the screening, Ghost in the Machine asks us to rethink the story we’ve been told about AI, who benefits from it and who bears the cost.
The discussion will be moderated by Alix Dunn, founder of The Maybe and host of the Webby-nominated Computer Says Maybe podcast. More panellists will be announced soon.

What’s the Citizens Film Club?
There are fewer places to gather, watch and talk about the things that matter. That’s why we've collaborated with Doc Society to screen the documentaries about Big Tech, democracy and power that the algorithms won’t put in front of you.
And we want to take it beyond cinemas. Whether it’s a few friends in your living room or a screening at your local pub, we want to help people watch and discuss these films together.
Interested in hosting a screening or watch-along? Email finn@the-citizens.com and we’ll help you get started.
The Citizens is a journalism and campaigning nonprofit dedicated to building citizen power to hold Big Tech and governments to account.
